“I’m sorry, you have breast cancer.”

These are words that hold power but are not words that need to define you.

Westman Waves of Hope organizer Darlene Yurchuk shared some very powerful words last year when she said, “cancer is a word, not a sentence, and just because there is a diagnosis, doesn’t mean you’re done for.”

Westman Waves of Hope formed in 1999 as Canada’s 12th dragon boat team for breast cancer survivors. The team includes active paddlers (breast cancer survivors) and a team of supporters that may or may not be survivors who support from shore. There are 20 paddlers, including one steer person and one drummer.

The purpose of Waves of Hope is to raise awareness and promote early detection of breast cancer, which is key to survival. They also work very hard to improve the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of those living with breast cancer by dragon boat racing and other community activities.

On April 24, two events were held at the Keystone Centre attended by well over 300 people. Those who attended were able to enjoy a wonderful fashion show, which featured local models volunteering their time to strut their stuff down the catwalk wearing some of Brandon’s finest fashions. Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and the Brandon Police Service volunteered throughout both events.

An event like this hits home with many of us who have lost someone to cancer, or have struggled with it ourselves. This event is one of Brandon’s most popular events and teamwork is what makes this dream work. Many community partners and volunteers come together and put together a successful event year after year to raise money and awareness to continue fighting. Fighting cancer is a team effort which is what the dragon boat team represents.

There is a special connection when cancer has touched your life to some degree, and everyone on the team is working toward the same goal. They all have also experienced very similar medical experiences, thus all being “in the same boat.”
