GLASGOW – Former Olympic champion Damian Warner is hanging on to a slim lead halfway through the men’s decathlon at the Commonwealth Games.
Warner topped the standings with 4,353 points, just 14 clear of India’s Tejaswin Shankar, after five events Thursday
The 36-year-old from London, Ont., finished first in the 100 metres in 10.21 seconds, second in the long jump at 7.77 metres and fifth in the shot put at 13.84 metres. He then placed third in the high jump at 1.97 metres and fifth the 400-metre race.
The decathlon competition wraps Friday with the 110-metre hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1,500 metres.
Canada sits third in the Commonwealth table behind Australia and England after adding six medals Thursday. That pushed its total to 45 — 15 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze — through Day 7 of the Games.
Para sprinter Sheriauna Haase of Toronto won gold in the women’s T47 100-metre final, crossing the finish line in 12.23 seconds. Fellow Canadian Chloe Dunbar of Newport, N.S., claimed silver in 12.33 and New Zealand’s Anna Grimaldi took bronze.
“This experience was so amazing,” said Haase. “It was kind of a new level of locking in that my coach, and I went through and just really trusting God’s plan for how this whole process was going to go.
“I’m just so grateful to have won gold. It took me by surprise. I still can’t even believe it. Every single time I look at the medal, I can’t believe that it’s around my neck.”
Julia Tunks of London, Ont., captured women’s discus silver with a throw of 60.67 metres on her second attempt, while Canada’s George Quarcoo and his guide Oluwasegun Makinde earned bronze in the men’s 100-metre T12 final.
Earlier, weightlifters Xavier Lusignan and Etta Love added a pair of bronze medals to Canada’s tally.
Lusignan, from Mansfield, Que., finished third in the men’s 110-kilogram division with lifts of 159 kilograms in the snatch and 197 in the clean and jerk, for a total of 356.
Fiji’s Taniela Tuisuva Rainibogi won gold with a Games-record 378, while England’s Cyrille Tchatchet II took silver with 374.
Love, from Saskatoon, climbed from fourth after the snatch to claim bronze in the women’s 86-kilogram event with a total of 250. She recorded the second-best clean and jerk at 144 kilograms after lifting 106 in the snatch.
The Commonwealth Games run through Sunday.
