Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 28/08/2010 (5751 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Most of us have sat back and dreamed of the day when we will have finally paid our dues and move up the ranks to become the head honcho, boss or big cheese.

Call it what you will, but for three longtime employees at MyPhone.ca, that dream has come true.

Tracy Kerluke started work at MyPhone.ca 10 years ago and now, as original owner John Falloon eases into retirement, she and two co-workers, Samantha Falloon and Miranda Johnson, are taking the reins of the business.

"It just kind of came to us one day," Kerluke said of their decision to purchase the business. "We work together so well and we knew (Falloon) was retiring so we thought, why not? Let’s do this."

The trio, who are all in their 20s and 30s, took over as owners at the start of the month.

But don’t expect big changes at MyPhone.ca. The operation, which offers home, office and on-the-go phone systems of all shapes, sizes and price points, has been running smoothly for 10 years and Kerluke says there are no immediate plans for any major changes.

MyPhone.ca is located at Unit C-1417 Rosser Ave.

SPRINGFIELD WOODWORKING,KITCHEN AND BATH

Reader, be warned; I’m sharing unconfirmed information, but trust me, I have a strong hunch.

After making a pit stop at Two Farm Kids this week — it’s anniversary time there and there’s a whack of good deals to be had — I noticed a modest sign propped up in the window of the neighbouring, now-vacant space Forbidden Flavour’s 34th Street location used to call home.

The sign was that of Springfield Woodworking, Kitchen and Bath, a cabinetry and woodworking business run by the folks at Springfield Hutterite Colony, east of Winnipeg.

Whether the sign was placed to block some shade or the company has actual plans to expand into the Brandon market is still unclear, but the calls are out and in my opinion, any sign of action at a vacant storefront is promising news.

HOT TUB BLOWOUT

The advertisement says it all: "Largest display of hot tubs and swim spas in the region from major brands at huge savings."

Now that’s a mouthful; and a potential godsend for your aching muscles, not to mention your wallet.

Visit the Keystone Centre today between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., or tomorrow before 5 p.m. to snag a deal, as promised.

REESOR’S JEWELLERY

If business is good, why change it? Although Reesor’s Jewellery has evolved and adapted over the years, that philosophy is exactly what’s kept business going strong for more than a century.

Known for its in-house gemologist, goldsmith and engravers, Reesor’s has been making necks and fingers sparkle for a whopping 128 years now.

To celebrate this historic milestone, the company is hosting a storewide-sale this weekend.

As a point of interest, David Anson Reesor established his business in 1882, the same year the City of Brandon was incorporated.

Reesor’s first moved into the Shoppers Mall in 1971 and has since relocated three times.

GENESIS HOSPITALITY

The big boss at the Victoria Inn and Royal Oak Inn and Suites — Genesis Hospitality — has received some credit, where credit is do.

Genesis was named one of Canada’s Most Engaged Workplaces by I Love Rewards, an industry leader in results-driven employee rewards and recognition solutions.

The "Most Engaged" moniker was awarded after the I Love Rewards Team evaluated Genesis’ performance on eight elements of employee engagement including communication, leadership, culture and personal growth.

There may be a growing list of 50-best and -most in the business world but be that as it may, public kudos for a job well done is always a good thing.

Kudos, Genesis.

REJUVENATE

High school teacher by day, small business owner by night and now, you can make that owner of two small businesses.

Crocus Plains teacher and founder of CompuTemp’s Employment Services, Tannis Ortynsky, is behind the newest business to grace Victoria Avenue this month.

Rejuvenate offers pain-free microcurrent laser treatments to help you quit your nicotine habit and banish those laugh lines.

The unique, niche-filling business idea embodied also offers DNA testing — the first of its kind offered outside of Winnipeg.
