Westman brought in 2017 in style on Saturday night! Camera in hand, I cruised through a few venues and grabbed some shots of folks, bringing in the new year.

There were many events happening around the city to choose from. Lady of the Lake featured Jelle Geurts on piano and the Jakeleg Blues Band. The Dock on Princess partygoers listened to the cool beats by DJ Doug Kool. Prairie Firehouse was entertained by Brandon band Just 4 Kicks. The Double Decker enjoyed the acoustic classic rock duo The Booze Brothers. The Canad Inns brought in the new year dancing the night away to The Beetles.

In my travels, I saw desirable, mouth-watering plates of food, and friends dancing and having fun. New Year’s can mean a fresh start, forgetting the bad memories, moving ahead and starting things on a positive note. For some it will mean hitting the gym, eating healthier, or it could even mean changing jobs or leaving a relationship.

Since the most popular New Year’s resolution seems to be losing weight and working out and since I just happen to love the gym and this topic, I feel this is the perfect opportunity to give you a piece of advice that will save you time, money and heartache.

There is no wrap, drink, pill, or device that will make you look, feel and cope better. These gimmicks will cost you so much money and they will leave you feeling defeated. You, the food you eat and the exercise you do are the only things, you need to make a change at any age. You can accomplish anything that you want but it will take effort, dedication and consistency.

Eat less crappy food, move more. You will get out of your life what you put in to it, so this year put in more. Don’t beat yourself up for the past or worry about the future. Every single day make the decision to do better than the day before. You, my friend, are worth it. This year, your New Year’s resolution does not have to end in February.

I have heard that in other parts of the world, people let go of used items and furniture or jump into freezing cold water so they can emerge out of the water with a clean slate on New Year’s. I am not suggesting you jump into freezing cold water but I am suggesting that when you want to give up your resolution no matter what it is … don’t.

Happy New Year, everyone!
