An annual sold-out event on the Brandon social scene, the annual Wheat Kings Sportsman’s Dinner took place on Feb. 6 at the Keystone Centre.

Organized by Rick Dillabough, director of business operations and scholarships for the Brandon Wheat Kings hockey club, the event was once again a smashing success.

This year, more than 600 people came out to enjoy a wonderful evening. Featured entertainment this year was TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie and comedian Kelly Taylor. Those who attended were able to compete for a chance to win some amazing prizes, which included a new iPhone from Telus, a patio set worth more than $1,000 from J&G/Rona and a Smart TV from Leon’s. Also included in the prizes were a number of awesome auction items from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Vegas Golden Knights and alumni.

The Sportsman’s Dinner became a Brandon annual event in the late 1960s and each year proceeds raised go toward the Wheat Kings Scholarship Fund. This event has boasted some pretty phenomenal speakers over the years, such as Lanny McDonald, Dennis Hull, Brad Park, Phil Esposito, Mike Bossy, Ray Ferraro, Wendel Clark, John Ferguson, Terry O’Reilly, Ron MacLean and Don Cherry. There have also been many well-known comedians to take the stage at the Keystone Centre, including Big Daddy Tazz, Derek Edwards, Mike MacDonald, Gord Paynter, Bruce Clark, Ron James and “Corner Gas” star Brent Butt.

Tickets for the 2021 dinner will go on sale in the fall and the lineup for 2021 will be announced in November.
