Once upon a time, there were fun events that were happening in Brandon, folks hugged each other and were quite fine to share microphones, shake hands and have a taste of someone else’s drink. We didn’t worry about buying all the toilet paper and had not yet heard the phrase “social distancing.”

Hey there, time traveller!

Once upon a time, there were fun events that were happening in Brandon, folks hugged each other and were quite fine to share microphones, shake hands and have a taste of someone else’s drink. We didn’t worry about buying all the toilet paper and had not yet heard the phrase “social distancing.”

One such carefree night happened in February, when Prairie Mountain Health held their inaugural Master the Microphone Karaoke contest, which was hosted by Look Music at The 40. I was honoured to be the karaoke hostess for the evening and enjoyed the many hilarious and amazing performances.

Approximately 50 people attended the event to watch and cheer on those who entered the friendly competition. Winners were chosen based on the loudest applause made by the audience. There were three categories that folks could enter: A solo, a duo and group act. Some of the acts came up with stage names such as Prairie Mountain Cougars, Gerry’s Angels, The Jimmy Sweets and Mary Banilow.

The event was organized by the Prairie Mountain Health Employee Wellness Committee. I spoke to one of the event organizers, Darra Black, who said: “PMH has thousands of employees that work in different communities, settings and facilities. This event was hosted as a relaxed fun way to meet other members of the PMH team and to help reinforce a culture of team building. We recognize the impact that working in Healthcare has on our employees as well as the impact that this line of work has on their support systems.

“Friends and family are an extended part of the PMH support team. They were invited to join in on the fun to help foster a culture that recognizes and supports families. Due to the location, it was an 18-plus event, but we also recently hosted a PMH Winter Fun Day at Asessippi Ski Hill so that our employee’s children could participate in our team building activities.”

After the contest portion of the evening was over, everyone had a relaxed and fun evening singing karaoke. It was also open to the public. They hope to add a “masked” singer element next year to hopefully increase participation from those who might be a little more on the shy side and would prefer to have their identity hidden while performing.

To all of the Prairie Mountain Health staff, I just want to thank you for the job you do. These are trying and stressful times, and I can’t imagine what some of you on the front lines are feeling right now. Please know you are valued and appreciated.
