The headline of this column is a line from a newly released song called “Best Friend” written by Brandon’s own Mitchell Mozdzen. He sings, he plays the guitar, he plays the bass, he has a good sense of humour, he is a fabulous entertainer and he is a kind-hearted humble human being.
Mitchell has a busy and impressive touring schedule, playing 49 shows already this year. This doesn’t include the gigs he has played with side projects and my band Misty Street (I’m honoured to have him as one of our new band members). Mitchell just released his new album called, “Green Blue” on June 21.
Mitchell played a release party at Lady of the Lake on Friday June 21 and again at The 40 on Saturday night. Backing musicians for both nights and the tour are Matt Kozicki (Bass), and Nick Moffat (drums). The Green side of his album features all original music with Indigenous themes, and the Blue side is popular blues covers recorded live on the floor.
I have personally listened to the entire album and was blown away. The depth of character to write like he does and the ability to word it in a way that the listener can understand is phenomenal. He paints a musical picture of issues that are right in front of our faces. Issues that have been, but should not and cannot be ignored.
The website badgardeningadvice.com had it right when they wrote the following about his performance at the Winnipeg Folk Fest: “He’s got a voice of truth to cut through a hundred social media feeds, and that’s just what ‘Can’t Send Me Home’ is all about. There is no question Canadian Culture is changing (for the better!!!) and if anyone has an issue with that Mitchell will smack them over the head with his bluesy guitar-or just write a poignant song about it.”
I asked Mitchell what feeds him and drives him forward to continue to make music.
“If I can emotionally reach or inspire someone at any age to pick up an instrument it fuels me to keep playing,” he said.
Mitchell also said we can expect the final EP of the Rainbow project, “Violet,” to drop mid-2020, and listeners can expect singer/songwriter songs with a hint of synth.
