HONG KONG – Canada’s Victoria Mboko and Leylah Fernandez are moving on to the Hong Kong Open’s second round in the women’s singles draw.
Mboko, the tournament’s third seed, rallied from one set down to defeat Australia’s Talia Gibson 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4 in one hour 48 minutes Tuesday.
The 19-year-old from Toronto, who won the National Bank Open in Montreal in August, struck 19 aces and converted four of five break-point chances in the win.
She’ll face the winner of Tuesday’s first-round matchup between Britain’s Katie Boulter and Alexandra Eala of the Philippines.
The second-seeded Fernandez cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Wang Xiyu of China in her opener.
The 23-year-old from Laval, Que., will take on Germany’s Eva Lys in the second round.
