GDANSK – Courtney Sarault, Steven Dubois and the mixed relay team all earned bronze medals for Canada on Sunday at an ISU short-track speedskating event.
Sarault, of Moncton, N.B., led the women’s 1500-metre race heading into the final lap but couldn’t fend off Koreans Choi Minjeong and Kim Gilli to settle for third in two minutes 30.985 seconds. Minjeong won in (2:30.656 ahead of Gilli (2:30.610).
Sarault claimed a third medal over that distance this season, earning back-to-back gold medals in October during two World Tour stops in Montreal.
Sarault was also fourth in the 500-metre race.
Dubois, of Terrebonne, Que., was third in the men’s 1,000-metre event in 1:25.283. Jens Van ‘T Wout of the Netherlands earned the victory (1:25.147) with Italian Pietro Sighel taking silver (1:25.195).
“Of course, I would have liked to be higher on the podium, but I haven’t finished lower than sixth in any of the distances I’ve competed in this year,” Dubois said. “That’s good consistency and good confidence, and I think I can give it a little more next week to go for the gold medal.”
Dubois teamed with William Dandjinou, Florence Brunelle and Danaé Blais to earn Canada a bronze in the 2,000-metre mixed relay. The Canadians finished in 2:40.224 behind the Netherlands (2:40.224) and Korea (2:40.155).
Sarault sits atop the women’s standings with 570 points, 90 ahead of American Corrine Stoddard. Dandjinou, of Montreal, leads the men’s standings with 652 points, ahead of Sighel (512) and Dubois (492).
