SYDNEY – Captain Hayley McDonald and Adrianna Milani each scored three goals, netminder Rowan Houweling made 11 saves, and Canada cruised to a 14-0 win over winless Hungary at the Under-18 women’s world hockey championship on Monday.
Canada improved to 2-0 in the preliminary round having beaten Switzerland 9-0 on Saturday. Canada will play unbeaten Sweden on Tuesday afternoon in a Group A tilt at the Sport and Wellness Centre in Membertou, N.S.
Canada and Sweden lead Group a with 2-0 records, while Switzerland and Hungary are both 0-2.
Megan Mossey had two goals and two assists on Monday for Canada, which outshot Hungary 74-11 and led 4-0 after the first period and 11-0 heading into the third.
Caileigh, Alida Korte, Sofia Ismael, Rachel Piggott, Madison Levesque and Kendall Doiron also scored for the hosts. Anais Leprohon, Aurora Matt and Ismael each chipped in with three assists. Seventeen Canadian players registered at least one point.
“There were many positives tonight, but we are a little disappointed with the scoring chances we gave up. We felt like it was a lack of focus, not changing or not tracking back, so we have to clean that up,” said Canadian coach Vicky Sunohara.
“We have been focusing a lot of our defensive play, and we have to be sharper tomorrow (against Sweden). We believe that we have a lot of depth; we have four lines and three sets of defence that can play, and it is showing.”
The United States leads Group B with a 2-0 record, while Czechia and Slovakia are both 1-1. Finland is 0-2.
