MILAN – Canada opens defence of its Olympic women’s hockey gold medal Thursday against Finland in Milan at the Winter Games.

The Canadians bring a veteran roster led by five-time Olympian Marie-Philip Poulin after beating the United States for gold four years ago in Beijing.

Canada faces Switzerland on Saturday, Czechia on Monday and the Americans on Tuesday in Group A play.

Men’s big air snowboarding qualification is scheduled for Thursday night in Livigno, where concern surrounds Regina’s Mark McMorris after he crashed during a training session Wednesday.

McMorris was taken off the big air course on a stretcher Wednesday night following the crash, and his condition was not immediately known. The Canadian Olympic Committee said the Regina native was being attended to by Canada Snowboard staff and that an update would follow.

Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman continue mixed doubles curling round-robin play Thursday in Cortina d’Ampezzo against Norway in the morning and Italy later in the day.

The Milan Cortina Olympics officially get underway Friday with a multi-site opening ceremony.
