ELMIRA – Emilie Lussier scored at 5:42 of overtime to lift the Concordia Stingers to a 2-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons in Saturday’s first of two U Sports women’s hockey championship semifinal showdowns at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

Maeve Sutherland-Case gave the Gryphons a 1-0 lead late in the first period, then Courtney Rice netted the equalizer late in the second period.

The Gryphons outshot the Stingers 33-30, but Stingers’ netminder Jordyn Verbeek was nearly unbeatable. Martina Fedel played a solid game in goal for the Gryphons as well.

The Stingers will play in Sunday’s championship final against the Montreal Carabins, who defeated the University of New Brunswick Reds 5-1 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Audrey-Anne Veillette scored twice for the Carabins, while Jade Picard, Juliette Rolland and Laurie-Anne Ethier netted singles. Hailey Jackson scored for the Reds, who were outshot 30-21.
