MUNICH – Canada’s Denis Shapovalov defeated eighth seed Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in first-round action Tuesday at the BMW Open.

Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., clinched the match with a strong third set in which he hit 13 winners and didn’t face break point.

The 26-year-old Canadian, who entered the tournament ranked 39th in the world, improved his record this season to 7-7.

He will next face the winner of a match between Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan.

Earlier, top seed Alexander Zverev defeated Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2), setting up a second-round match with Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo.

Diallo advanced at the ATP 500 clay-court tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ukrainian qualifier Vitaliy Sachko on Monday.
