Manitoba RCMP have released the names of the 16 people who died as of a result of last week’s fatal minibus collision last week near Carberry.
The identities of the deceased are as follows:
- Claudia Zurba, 87;
- Patsy Zamrykut, 88;
- Lillian Stobbe, 73;
- Donna Showdra, 79;
- Jean Rosenkranz, 82;
- Rose Perzylo, 80;
- Frank Perzylo, 82;
- Shirley Novalkowski, 76;
- Nettie Nakonechny, 87;
- Dianne Medwid, 70;
- Arlene Lindquist, 68;
- Helen Kufley, 88;
- Ann Hill, 81;
- Vangie Gilchrist, 83;
- Margaret Furkalo, 82 and,
- Louis Bretecher, 81
“This has been a cloud over this community since the collision occurred,” said Supt. Jeff Asmundson, West District Commander for the Manitoba RCMP.
“We lost 16 people who were mothers, fathers, sisters, brother, grandparents whose decades of contributions helped make this community what it is. They’re gone in an instant. Nine more remain in the hospital with serious injuries being tended to by dedicated health professionals.”
In his remarks, City of Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak said the accident has “reverberated” through the community.
“I would like to commend the first responders who cared for our citizens,” Bosiak said. “You have a tremendously difficult job and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I would also like to thank council and staff, our fire chief and the RCMP, Prairie Mountain Health and the Dauphin and District Ministerial Association.”
Premier Heather Stefanson, City of Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak and RM of Dauphin Reeve Ernest Sirski are also scheduled to speak at a media conference currently underway at Credit Union Place in Dauphin.
Beginning the conference, Cpl. Julie Courchaine said it would be a difficult day and that anyone present who needs to leave the room should feel free to do so.
Families of those lost were invited up to the front of the room to place photos of their loved ones bearing their names and ages.

The collision occurred when a minibus heading to Sand Hills Casino south on Highway 5 in the RM of North Cypress-Langford, just north of the Town of Carberry.
The bus, carrying 25 seniors from the Dauphin Healthy Living Centre, moved in front of an eastbound semi-truck and was struck. Manitoba RCMP have said the truck had right of way.
On the day the crash happened, 15 people were declared dead with another 10 said to be in hospital in varying conditions.
On Wednesday, RCMP announced that one of the injured had succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll to 16 — the same number of people who died in the deadly 2018 bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team in Saskatchewan.
In an update sent out Thursday morning, Shared Health confirmed that nine patients remained in hospital, four of whom were receiving critical care.
Some survivors have been interviewed, as well as the driver of the truck.
Dauphin and District Community Foundation has launched a fundraiser to help support seniors in the community in the wake of the crash titled “Support Our Seniors.”
“Its purpose will be to provide funding to programming, equipment, and activities that support seniors, and will be administered through the traditional community foundation model,” a media release sent out by the City of Dauphin Thursday afternoon stated.
To make tax-deductible donations to the fundraiser, people can visit the foundation’s website at ddcf.ca and click on the “make a donation” button, call toll-free at 1-877-974-3631, call locally at 204-638-4598 or in-person at 100 Main Street South in Dauphin.
“Donations to the local DDCF helps to build our community,” Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak said in the release. “A new fund dedicated to supporting our seniors establishes a perpetual legacy.”
A public memorial service is scheduled to take place tonight in Dauphin at 7 p.m at the Ukrainian Orthodox Hall. It will be livestreamed online at wcgtv.ca/player/wcgtv-free-previews.
