“We lost 16 people who were mothers, fathers, sisters, brother, grandparents whose decades of contributions helped make this community what it is. They’re gone in an instant. Nine more remain in the hospital with serious injuries being tended to by dedicated health professionals.”

In his remarks, City of Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak said the accident has “reverberated” through the community.

“I would like to commend the first responders who cared for our citizens,” Bosiak said. “You have a tremendously difficult job and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I would also like to thank council and staff, our fire chief and the RCMP, Prairie Mountain Health and the Dauphin and District Ministerial Association.”

Premier Heather Stefanson, City of Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak and RM of Dauphin Reeve Ernest Sirski are also scheduled to speak at a media conference currently underway at Credit Union Place in Dauphin.

Beginning the conference, Cpl. Julie Courchaine said it would be a difficult day and that anyone present who needs to leave the room should feel free to do so.

Families of those lost were invited up to the front of the room to place photos of their loved ones bearing their names and ages.

This story will be updated with additional information from the conference as the afternoon progresses.

The collision occurred when a minibus heading to Sand Hills Casino south on Highway 5 in the RM of North Cypress-Langford, just north of the Town of Carberry.

The bus, carrying 25 seniors from the Dauphin Healthy Living Centre, moved in front of an eastbound semi-truck and was struck. Manitoba RCMP have said the truck had right of way.

On the day the crash happened, 15 people were declared dead with another 10 said to be in hospital in varying conditions.

On Wednesday, RCMP announced that one of the injured had succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll to 16 — the same number of people who died in the deadly 2018 bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team in Saskatchewan.

In an update sent out Thursday morning, Shared Health confirmed that nine patients remained in hospital, four of whom were receiving critical care.

Some survivors have been interviewed, as well as the driver of the truck.

Dauphin and District Community Foundation has launched a fundraiser to help support seniors in the community in the wake of the crash titled “Support Our Seniors.”

“Its purpose will be to provide funding to programming, equipment, and activities that support seniors, and will be administered through the traditional community foundation model,” a media release sent out by the City of Dauphin Thursday afternoon stated.

To make tax-deductible donations to the fundraiser, people can visit the foundation’s website at ddcf.ca and click on the “make a donation” button, call toll-free at 1-877-974-3631, call locally at 204-638-4598 or in-person at 100 Main Street South in Dauphin.

“Donations to the local DDCF helps to build our community,” Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak said in the release. “A new fund dedicated to supporting our seniors establishes a perpetual legacy.”

Guilty plea in intimate image case

A 32-year-old man admitted to screenshotting an intimate image of his former partner before showing it to the woman’s daughter in a 2021 incident that occurred in Virden.

A three-day Manitoba Court of King’s Bench trial — set to begin Wednesday in Brandon — was cancelled after the accused pleaded guilty to making an intimate image available without consent from Nov. 19-21, 2021. The Crown stayed an assault charge.

The Sun is not naming the accused to protect the identity of the 37-year-old victim.

“We understand the accused is saying when this happened, he was under the influence of alcohol and his judgment was largely impaired,” Crown attorney Rich Lonstrup said in court Wednesday.

Luebke only acclaimed candidate as nominations close

By Alex Lambert 3 minute read Yesterday at 10:13 PM CDT

Only one of Brandon city council’s 11 seats will be filled through acclamation this year, down from four in 2022.

Ward 6 Coun. Bruce Luebke, the lone candidate whose name won’t appear on any ballots in the Oct. 28 election, said he’s “split” on the lack of competition.

“It’s always a little anticlimactic to get acclaimed. You don’t get to sit around on election night and see the votes,” Luebke, who will enter into his third term, said on Wednesday.

The nomination period officially closed at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with between two and four candidates registered for every other ward, and two hopefuls in the mayor’s race.

Hunters being turned away near Bloodvein: MWF

By Nicole Buffie 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Wildlife Federation says hunters are again being refused access to land near Bloodvein River First Nation, a year after leadership told court it would let them through.

The senior policy adviser for the Manitoba Wildlife Federation said he has had five reports of hunters being turned away at a checkstop the First Nation set up last year to stop the flow of drugs and alcohol into the community.

“(Checkstop officers) said they’re not allowing hunters through,” Chris Heald said. “They made that clear, and that was the end of it. This is just a rinse and repeat of last year.”

The wildlife federation took the First Nation to court last year after several hunters were refused access to Crown land during hunting season. The federation argued the checkpoint was unlawful and impedes access to hunters, who have the right to be there under the province’s Wildlife Act.

City council rejects bid for 96-hour parking limit

By Alex Lambert 5 minute read Yesterday at 10:14 PM CDT

Brandon city council on Monday voted down a push from one councillor to double the allotted time for on-street parking.

Coun. Bruce Luebke (Ward 6) proposed extending on-street parking from 48 hours to 96 hours to give residents more flexibility in how long they can remain parked on the road.

Council defeated the motion by 7-3 after a long discussion and a recommendation from city administration not to approve the change.

The result means that the city will keep the 48-hour limit for on-street parking, with some exceptions for certain neighbourhoods that were already in place.
