Wildeboer impresses early into Bobcat career

Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Updated: 8:07 AM CDT

The expectations of who Brynn Wildeboer can become on the volleyball court continue to rise.

A year ago, she was an undersized outside hitter who could thrive in high school, but likely not past that.

But she helped the Ste. Rose Celtics to a fourth-place finish at single-A provincials, earning a tournament all-star selection.

In the spring, she earned a starting spot on the Club West 18-and-under team, helping it to a provincial championship.

Gill to play familiar role for Bobcats

Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025

Write Munroop Gill off at your own risk.

The five-foot-11 guard from Surrey, B.C., is more than used to it. Often the smallest player on the floor, the Brandon University Bobcats rookie has scratched and clawed for every bucket and every opportunity in basketball.

It was that way long before he started playing organized hoops in high school.

“I’m the youngest of four brothers, so everything’s been a battle for me,” said the 18-year-old, who has brothers aged 26, 25 and 20. “I’ve been playing against grown men my whole life.

Ballan, Rodriguez named BU’s athletes of month

Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025

More than halfway into the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference women’s soccer season, just one team has been able to break the Brandon University Bobcats’ defence.

Tarin Ballan is a big reason for that.

The fourth-year defender has anchored the nationally ranked Bobcats to a 6-1-0 record and was named BU’s female athlete of the month on Wednesday, along with male winner Camilo Rodriguez.

“It’s exciting, also surprising,” Ballan said. “I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in if it weren’t for my team. Their support and how we came into the season really helped.”

Bisons sweep Bobcats in tourney final

By Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Sunday, Sep. 28, 2025

The Brandon University Bobcats showed their future is bright this weekend.

Whether it’s this season or years down the road, though, is uncertain. The Bobcats ran through the Saskatchewan Huskies, Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons in round-robin play at their home men’s volleyball tournament this week as the teams mixed starters with second- and third-stringers.

In the final, when Brandon and Manitoba showcased more or less starting rotations, the Bisons delivered a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-19) thumping at the Healthy Living Centre on Sunday.

“I thought the boys played really well. I thought we obviously need to improve in some areas, but that’s what these tournaments are for,” said Bobcats setter Kale Fisher, who had 24 assists and four digs in the final.

When the Brandon University Bobcats named Liam Kindle a captain last year, he tried to fit into the role.

He realized something didn’t feel right and spent the summer soul-searching before coming to a simple conclusion.

“I kind of just settled on being myself,” Kindle said.

“You can’t be a true leader without showing your true colours, being vulnerable, admitting your mistakes, and that’s what a lot of these younger guys need to see.

Rookies seldom see the floor in glamorous fashion, and Matt Lefebvre has no issue with that.

The Prince Albert, Sask., product will take whatever opportunity he’s given with the Brandon University Bobcats, even if it means playing setter on offence and middle blocker on defence.

The six-foot-five setter did it with Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Games at times this summer.

“It was really hard. Being a middle blocker is probably the hardest skill in volleyball, reading … and closing the block. It was a big learning curve, obviously, but I trust my coaching to keep me prepared and I trust my ability to be an effective middle blocker,” Lefebvre said.

Liam Pauls left for Gatineau and Mexico, then returned to Brandon University in a completely new situation.

The Team Canada outside hitter is one of just three starters returning from the lineup that won the Bobcats’ first-ever U Sports men’s volleyball championship in March.

The new-look BU squad returns to match action tonight at the site of its magic moment, against the team it beat to reach the final. It’s the Bobcats against the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Healthy Living Centre at 7:30 p.m., and Pauls can’t wait to see what his young team can do.

“I’m just excited to help them out. It’ll be a learning experience or a good challenge for them,” Pauls said. “Being that stable guy to help them through it, and our coaches will help them through it … I think we have a great squad, so there’s going to be some interesting battles and I’m excited to see it.”

BU coaches not concerned with U Sports transfer rule

Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Friday, Sep. 19, 2025

U Sports has announced a rule change allowing student-athletes more flexibility in their athletic careers, in the wake of the NCAA transfer portal’s growing popularity.

Previously, U Sports athletes who competed one season had to sit out for 365 days before suiting up for a new university. The new rule, announced Tuesday, is that first- and second-year players can transfer and play immediately the following season.

“This is an important step forward for U Sports and for our student-athletes. The landscape of post-secondary sport is evolving, and our role is to ensure our policies reflect the needs of those we serve,” U Sports CEO Pierre Arsenault said in a press release.

“By us providing a more responsive system for student-athletes at the start of their academic careers, we are empowering them to find their best program fit — both in the classroom and in competition. We believe this decision puts student-athletes first, which is exactly where they belong.”

Homecoming weekend meant a little extra to Camilo Rodriguez.

The best scorer in Brandon University Bobcats men’s soccer history made an emphatic return to the Healthy Living Centre field on Saturday, scoring four goals in a 5-1 triumph over the Providence Pilots.

Rodriguez, who won back-to-back Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference player of the year awards before leaving the team for the 2024-25 season, couldn’t have been happier to play on home turf again.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I missed the field, I missed the guys, I missed the support that we get from the fans here,” Rodriguez said. “It’s a pleasure to be back, a pleasure to play the beautiful game with the guys again, and I couldn’t have asked for a better result.”

Laure Dizengremel is amid a bigger adjustment than most post-secondary athletes, but you wouldn’t know it.

The Brandon University Bobcats rookie came off the bench and scored a key insurance goal in a 4-2 victory over the Providence Pilots at the Healthy Living Centre field on Saturday, making her mark on the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference’s fiercest women’s soccer rivalry.

She took the ball down the right side and floated a tough-angle shot past the Pilots’ goalkeeper to go up three with 10 minutes to play.

“It feels good, didn’t expect it,” Dizengremel said. “It was a hard pass so I was like, I’m not going to pass, I’m just going to try and shoot and it went in.”

The Brandon University Bobcats are hoping they’ve found the replacement for their biggest loss of the off-season.

Only time will tell.

Six-foot-nine centre DeMarco Duncan joined the BU men’s basketball team after two seasons at Highline College in Seattle, but injured his knee just a couple of days into training camp.

The Denver product is awaiting a diagnosis, but has shown promise so far as someone who can step in for graduates Jack McDonald and Blake Magnusson.

Rumor Nasecapow and Lexie Constant didn’t realize how much a Zone 11 soccer title would change their paths in life.

The centre-backs from Opaskwayak Cree Nation led Oscar Lathlin Collegiate to three straight clean sheets in the zone championship last year, earning a trip to Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association provincials.

The Wolverines lost their opener but beat the Neepawa Tigers 1-0 to reach the consolation final, catching the attention of Assiniboine College Cougars coach Manuel Luben, who signed them for the 2025 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season, along with midfielder Audrina Dreaver, also from OCN.

“It’s very exciting and I’m proud of them for making it this far with me,” Constant said after her first MCAC regular season game at Cougars Field on Saturday. “The change is really different, though, compared to back home.”
