Underwhelming first half for defending champs

By Thomas Friesen 6 minute read Friday, Dec. 19, 2025

The national championship hangover has been real.

The Brandon University Bobcats rode a wave of energy and upset three nationally ranked teams on home court to win their first-ever U Sports men’s volleyball title in March.

Nine months later, they’ve only won three regular-season matches and sit outside the Canada West playoff picture, even though 10 of 13 teams qualify.

BU (3-7) heads into the break on a five-match losing skid, including dropping its last four to Manitoba and UBC Okanagan at home.

Brandon struggled with tough first-half slate

By Thomas Friesen 6 minute read Friday, Dec. 19, 2025

If all you look at is wins and losses, the Brandon University Bobcats appeared to have a night-and-day turnaround a few weeks ago.

But they wouldn’t have made the breakthrough they did on the penultimate night of the first semester, beating the UBC Okanagan Heat in five sets, had it not been for the steps they took along the way to get comfortable in intense matches.

The BU women’s volleyball team still has a tough road ahead thanks to a 1-9 start to the Canada West season.

However, the Bobcats feel they’re on the right path, especially since former conference rookie of the year Maddy Hettinga joined the program for the last four matches and led Brandon to its first win.

BU MIDTERMS: Brandon started hot before gauntlet

By Thomas Friesen 6 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025

The year started as well as it could for the Brandon University women’s basketball team.

While the Bobcats finished the first term on an eight-game losing skid, it was all but inevitable given the opponents they faced.

Considering BU (3-9) is a victory away from equaling its Canada West win total from the past four seasons combined, the 3-1 start was enough to believe second-year head coach Ilarion Bonhomme has the program on a good path.

“A lot of positives to take away from it, I think we got better as a group,” Bonhomme said.

Skelton plays big role with grit

What Aubrey Skelton lacks in size, she more than makes up for in heart.

The five-foot-three blue-liner from Hartney, who recently committed to the women’s hockey team at Dakota College at Bottineau, comes by that resolve both on the ice and the rugby pitch.

“I think rugby definitely helped my stamina,” Skelton said. “You need a lot of endurance for that, of course, and also the aggressiveness with being up front and tackling. Also, the mentality because it’s a very tough sport.”

The 17-year-old, right-shooting defender plays with the Deloraine-based Southwest Stars, and will be in action this evening at the Keystone Centre’s Enns Brothers Arena when they meet the Brandon Wheaties in under-18 Rural Manitoba Female Hockey League action.

Brandon hot and cold all semester

The streakiest team in Canada West men’s basketball last year is back to its old ways.

The Brandon University Bobcats proved they can hang with the best but lose to the rest on any given night and continued that trend with a Jekyll-and-Hyde first half.

The Bobcats knocked off the defending Canada West champion Calgary Dinos once, lost to the last-place Saskatchewan Huskies once, and split four of their six regular-season weekends.

For a team that went 7-13 last year and barely made the playoffs, they’ll take 6-6 at the break.

Karine St. Kitts is doing everything she can to help the Brandon University Bobcats achieve their dreams.

All the while, she’s living hers.

The certified athletic therapist from Sudbury, Ont., started working for BU in September on a one-year contract to cover Schad Richea’s sabbatical.

For St. Kitts, the multi-faceted nature of the job — field work, the clinic, and the teaching component — is exactly what she wanted to do.

Bobcats add Saskatoon libero Flaman

By Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Monday, Dec. 8, 2025

Hannah Flaman wanted nothing more than to follow in her big sister’s footsteps, even though she wasn’t sure it would happen.

The five-foot-five libero from Saskatoon dreamed of playing U Sports volleyball but wasn’t hearing back from coaches. Flaman took matters into her own hands and contacted a few, including Brandon University head coach Kailan Robinson.

Robinson recognized her name, watched her film and has decided to add her to BU’s rookie class for the 2026-27 Canada West season.

“It’s kind of surreal,” Flaman said. “There was a while where I didn’t think it was going to happen for me, so it just feels so good that it really is.”

Bhatti, Dyer named BU’s athletes of month

Put the numbers, the accolades and the wins aside for a second, and you see a totally different version of Sultan Bhatti.

He’s still scoring and rebounding at an elite clip, near the top of Canada West men’s basketball. That’s why he’s the Brandon University male athlete of the month of November, along with Nerissa Dyer on the women’s side.

But the fifth-year forward is simply enjoying this game again.

It was most evident during the second half against Regina on home court, when he hit a contested layup, then slid on the floor before getting up with a giant grin on his face as the Healthy Living Centre crowd roared.

First-place UBCO completes weekend sweep

By Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025

Riley Brunet brought a new dimension to the Brandon University Bobcats’ attack on Saturday, and it was nearly enough to help knock the UBC Okanagan Heat out of first place.

The fourth-year middle blocker posted a career-high eight kills with just two errors, adding seven blocks, but the Bobcats lost 3-2 (25-19, 25-27, 24-26, 26-24, 15-12) in their Canada West men’s volleyball match at the Healthy Living Centre on Saturday.

“They’re a great team, man. There’s a reason they’re first in the conference,” Brunet said, adding he’s feeling good about his offensive game. “That’s what I was working out in the off-season, and it’s tough switching setters but I’m very confident with the chemistry between me and Kale (Fisher).”

The first set was tied 13-13 when Liam Pauls and Liam Kindle combined for three untimely errors to go down 17-14.

Bobcats drop five-set thriller to Heat

By Thomas Friesen 5 minute read Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025

The Brandon University Bobcats were two points from a perfect end to the semester and their first weekend sweep in more than three years.

But a marathon of a match ended with a near-minute-long rally and an attack BU just barely couldn’t corral.

UBC Okanagan snuck away from the Healthy Living Centre with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 19-17) victory on Saturday.

“It shows we can compete,” said Bobcats head coach Kailan Robinson. “We’ve been working a lot on our competitive energy, closing out games when we haven’t in the past. We’re getting better, so at least we’re seeing improvements.”

BU lost 102-99 to Saskatchewan on Friday night. The Bobcats head into the break in fifth place in Canada West’s Prairie Division.

In the women’s game, Ella Averill scored 13 points, but no other Bobcat hit double-digits in a 114-50 loss.

Scott Koskie watched the Brandon University Bobcats win nationals on home court and couldn’t wait to take his team there.

The Winnipeg native in his second season as head coach of the UBC Okanagan Heat men’s volleyball team circled this weekend on his calendar as soon as the schedule came out.

On Friday night, they delivered a terrific effort to beat the Bobcats 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19) at the Healthy Living Centre.

“This is a great place to play, great fans, these guys put on a great performance last year and they always play tough at home. It feels great to come in and beat a good team at home,” Koskie said.

Maddy Hettinga started the match standing on the bench and ended it collapsing to her knees in jubilation.

In between, she played four phenomenal sets against the UBC Okanagan team she walked away from two years ago. The six-foot-one outside hitter posted 12 kills and just two errors to lead the Brandon University Bobcats to their first win of the Canada West season, 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13) at the Healthy Living Centre on Friday.

Hettinga left the past in the past, going out with the simple plan of having fun playing the sport she thought she might never play again until just a month ago.

“It was so fun. It took me right back to high school. I just loved it. I don’t even have words, it was just awesome,” Hettinga said.

Weekends like this are what Canada West men’s volleyball players mean when they say there are no easy matchups.

What was, on paper, a rare Brandon University Bobcats clash against a bottom-half team entering the season is now one against the toast of the conference.

The 3-5 Bobcats welcome the 9-1 UBC Okanagan Heat to the Healthy Living Centre today at 7:45 p.m.

UBCO went 7-17, 3-21, and 9-11 in its past three seasons, but BU players and staff have seen this coming.
