Province modifying fatal intersection

By Alex Lambert 2 minute read Yesterday at 10:13 PM CDT

The provincial government is making a number of changes to the intersection of Highway 110 and Richmond Avenue East in Brandon ahead of traffic lights being activated later this summer, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor said on Monday.

The big change will see four-way stop signs with flashing red lights at the intersection, which currently has only two stop signs on Highway 110.

The province is also adding rumble strips and installing digital road message signs to give drivers additional warning of the stop ahead.

Speed limit changes are also coming, a provincial spokesperson said.

Manitoba’s chief medical examiner has called an inquest into the death of a 41-year-old man who overdosed on methamphetamine while in custody of the Brandon Police Service in 2023.

A hearing will be held at the Brandon Court House on July 6 to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Sean Paul Connors from Headingley, the provincial government said in a news release on Tuesday.

Connors was arrested on Aug. 19, 2023, and taken to the police station in Brandon.

While in custody, he told officers he had ingested methamphetamine, the release said.

BPS officer accused of assaulting youth in high school takedown

By Skye Anderson 4 minute read Yesterday at 10:15 PM CDT

A Brandon police officer has been charged with assault in connection with the arrest of a male youth last June after an incident that appears to be the sword attack at École secondaire Neelin High School.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba announced the charge against Brandon Police Service Const. Darren Shewchuk, 53, in a Tuesday morning news release.

The charge relates to the officer’s response after BPS received a report of a youth “armed with an edged weapon who was out of control at a local high school” on June 10, 2025.

Police took the suspect into custody after using a Taser on him, the IIU said.

City to consider Indigenous naming policy

By Alex Lambert 5 minute read Yesterday at 10:23 PM CDT

The City of Brandon will explore implementing an Indigenous naming policy, council has decided.

The motion by Coun. Kris Desjarlais came last week as council agreed to give Indigenous names — Oeti and Shunkawakan Onazin — to two city-owned parcels of land on the banks of the Assiniboine River.

In the Dakota language, Oeti means “a place for camping,” while Shunkawakan Onazin means “horse pasture.”

In a followup interview on Monday, Desjarlais (Ward 2) said it’s important for the city to create a protocol or process for how it would go about engaging with First Nation and Métis communities and partners around the naming of spaces and areas.

Flood-ravaged Parkland region braced for more rain

By Nicole Buffie 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:26 PM CDT

WINNIPEG — Heavy rain was set to fall Tuesday night on the flood-ravaged region in western Manitoba in which more than 100 people had to be evacuated amid power outages and road washouts, which prompted officials to declare states of emergency.

Premier Wab Kinew was preparing to travel to the Parkland region after heavy rains battered the area near Duck Mountain Provincial Park, a spokesperson said.

The provincial Emergency Management Organization has been mobilized to co-ordinate the response, the premier said, and workers from the transportation and infrastructure department were assessing the damage to determine whether the floodwater can be pumped out of the area.

“I think one of the things that’s really top of mind is just ensuring … people, particularly in some of the rural areas outside Swan River and outside of Minitonas, have access to emergency services,” Kinew said.

Soldiers of 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery will take to the streets for a Freedom of the City of Brandon parade and ceremony on Thursday.

The parade represents the highest civic honour a city can bestow upon a military unit.

Tomorrow’s event acknowledges the local unit during “significant investment and discussion around the military in our country,” Mayor Jeff Fawcett told the Sun Tuesday.

“This is one of the biggest times in the history of our military that’s going on right now — we’ve never had investment like this going into our military,” Fawcett said.

OTTAWA - The federal government is expected to bar kids under the age of 16 from social media in new legislation set to be introduced Wednesday.

The government gave notice Tuesday that it will introduce a bill "to enact the Digital Safety Act and the Digital Safety Commission of Canada Act." It has scheduled a technical briefing and press conference on the new bill for late Wednesday afternoon.

Culture Minister Marc Miller, who is taking the lead on the legislation, said the government will take all reasonable measures to ensure kids are safe.

“It’s obvious why it’s a priority. Kids are dying,” he told reporters on Parliament Hill.

Carney says opening of Gordie Howe Bridge an important symbol of Canada-U.S. ties

David Baxter, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 4:10 PM CDT

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Mark Carney says it's good news that the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit will get its official opening at the end of the week.

Carney said Tuesday the bridge is an important symbol of the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship, which has been strained by the ongoing trade war.

"It's positive news, obviously. The bridge will be open at the end of the week and, you know, a symbol, but also a fact of co-operation between our countries," he said on his way into a cabinet meeting.

"I just want to salute those who constructed it on both sides and looking forward to getting it done."
